Steam Turbines – Powering up the world

Steam turbines are not new as they are found everywhere and are largely used to rotate huge power generators that produce electricity. Since their invention, they have become the most rugged, reliable and versatile drivers in the industry. Their primary motive is to convert thermal energy into mechanical energy by using turbine blades to make the rotor rotate. Based on the change of position for the jets, they can increase or decrease the rate of rotor spin.

On the other hand, a reaction turbine works differently from an impulse turbine. The steam nozzles are attached to the rotor blades on opposite sides. The nozzles are positioned in such a way that when they project jets of stream, they spin the rotors that keep rotating as long as steam is being ejected. These rotors can attain high speeds because the nozzle designs focus the steam into a thin stream, although the early warm up period may take few moments.
